Every individual applying for an insurance producer license must qualify by passing exams for the lines of authority they wish to hold on their license. Resident producers adding a line of authority to an existing license are not required to be fingerprinted after passing the exams.

Applicants are not required to attend prelicensing education (preparation can be done by classroom instruction or by self-study). The applicant must pass the appropriate exams and make application to the North Dakota Insurance Department within one year of passing the exam.

Study materials and classroom schedules can be obtained from a number of prelicensing providers.

Exams are administered by PSI. For additional exam information or to schedule an exam, visit PSI's website or call (855) 340-3905.

An applicant for the line of variable life and annuities must first be licensed as a securities salesperson with the North Dakota Securities Department (N.D. Admin.Code § 45-02-02-11).

Business entities must have at least one designated principal producer licensed in North Dakota for the lines of authority requested.

Make sure you answer all questions completely and disclose all information requested. In addition to the information requested in the questions on the application form, licensed insurance producers are required to report to the Insurance Commissioner within 30 days any administrative actions or any criminal conviction in any jurisdiction (N.D.C.C. § 26.1-26-45.1). This requirement to report does not allow you to exclude any criminal convictions (see Bulletin 2009-2). If you have any questions about what needs to be reported or disclosed, contact the Department before submitting your application.

You can submit your application electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).

To submit a paper application, please print the Uniform Application for Individual Producer License/Registration. Complete the application, sign and date it, and send to:

Resident business entities can also apply electronically through NIPR or by using the Uniform Application for Individual Producer License/Registration form to add lines of authority to their North Dakota insurance producer license.
