Where’s My Refund?

Welcome to the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner’s online refund status inquiry system. If you filed your Individual Income Tax return and you are anticipating a refund, you may use this system to determine the status of your refund. By entering certain information about yourself you will be able to identify if your return has been received, if your return is being processed, and the date your refund was issued.

When you access “Where’s My Refund,” and get a message that says:

    1. Your “return has not been processed”
      • Double check the information you entered on the refund inquiry page to be sure that your entry matches the data you provided on the return you filed. This includes entering the exact amount of your expected refund.
      • If you re-entered the information exactly as you entered on your return and still get this message, it is possible that the Tax Department has not received your return and your return is not in our system. Do not re-submit another return until you call the Tax Department at 701.328.1242.

    2. If you get a message that your “return is being processed”
      • Your return has been received and we will process it as soon as possible. If you get this message after one week or more, your return likely has an error and will take longer to process. You may be contacted if more information is required.

    3. If you get the message that your “refund was issued on [the date specified]”
      • The date issued is when the refund was either released for direct deposit or was mailed from our office. For direct deposited refunds, please allow 3-5 business days (excluding weekends or holidays) from the issued date for the refund to reach your bank account.

IMPORTANT: Before you get started, you will need to have a copy of your Individual Income Tax return that you recently submitted. That will enable you to provide the information needed to search for your refund.

To ensure you are the person who should receive this information, you will need to provide:

If you are ready to request the status of your refund, go to refund inquiry page.

If you need help, visit our Refund Help page.

NOTE: It is a violation of State Law to make an inquiry or attempt to obtain information on another taxpayer.

If you do not wish to submit your personal information electronically, you may call the Tax Department or submit a written request.

If you used direct deposit, please check with your bank before contacting the Tax Department.

When you contact the Tax Department, you will need to provide certain specific information in order to determine the status of your refund. You will need to provide:

  1. Your name and current address.
  2. Your social security number.
  3. Filing status.
  4. Exact amount of anticipated refund.

To request the status of your refund, you may call the department at (701) 328-1242.

Or you may send a written request to:

Office of State Tax Commissioner
600 E Boulevard Ave., Dept 127
