Gov. Doug Burgum today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Lance Yohe, former executive director of the Red River Basin Commission, to serve as a Commissioner on the part of the United States on the International Joint Commission (IJC).

“Congratulations to Lance on his unanimous confirmation to this important panel, where his expertise will help North Dakota and other states address key cross-border issues such as flooding, droughts and water supply,” Burgum said. “Lance’s more than 30 years of experience dealing with water and land issues in the Red River Basin will serve us well as he represents U.S. interests on the IJC. We’re grateful to President Trump for selecting Lance and to our congressional delegation for seeing his nomination through to confirmation.”

The IJC is responsible for regulating shared water uses between the United States and Canada and for preventing disputes and recommending solutions to cross-border water rights issues.
