BISMARCK, N.D. (Jan. 16, 2019) – Gov. Doug Burgum released the following statement today after President Donald Trump announced the nomination of former Grand Forks County State’s Attorney Peter Welte to serve as a U.S. District Court judge for North Dakota.
"Peter has proven himself to be a highly capable litigator, passionate public servant and tireless advocate dedicated to the rule of law throughout his career as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney and law school instructor,” Burgum said. “His broad professional experience and devoted service to the community make him a wonderful choice for this position, and we urge his confirmation in the Senate."
Welte was a prosecutor in Grand Forks County from 1999 to 2015, serving as state’s attorney from 2003 to 2015. He currently is a shareholder in the Vogel Law Firm, where his practice focuses on criminal defense and agricultural law. Welte received his undergraduate degree in agricultural economics from North Dakota State University in 1989 and graduated with distinction in 1997 from the University of North Dakota School of Law, where he now serves as an adjunct instructor.
