The North Dakota Department of Commerce invites community leaders to participate in a multi-state placemaking best practices exchange workshop. This free event will be held Aug. 3, 2023 at Minot State University’s Student Center.

"North Dakota is committed to creating 21st-century communities with vibrant cores that help to attract and retain talent,” said Commerce Commissioner Josh Teigen.  “We believe that these unique places and spaces are the differentiator that helps lead to healthy fiscal—and physical—communities."

Placemaking is a collaborative process among public, private and community partners to strategically improve the social, cultural and economic structure of a community. Placemaking plays a key role in creating healthy, prosperous communities where people want to live, work, play and learn. This workshop aims to showcase effective placemaking approaches, introduce attendees to resources and tools, and connect with experts from other states. Session topics will include:

  • Winter placemaking
  • Public spaces and gathering places
  • Urban placemaking
  • Planning and implementation
  • Cross-sector engagement

Commerce supports placemaking as a catalyst to enhance the statewide attraction of businesses, promotion of economic activity, and the retention and attraction of talented workers, strengthening the economic resiliency of North Dakota communities.
