FROM SMALL TOWNS TO BIG LEAGUES
Whatever your passion, pick your seat and settle in for an enjoyable evening watching your favorite team play. North Dakota's high schools and colleges feature baseball and track in the spring, football and volleyball in the fall, and basketball, wrestling and hockey in the winter. The lineup is limited only by where games are being played — and they are being played pretty much anywhere in the state.
Friday nights in the fall are reserved for high school football — from small-town 9-man to Class AAA in the state's larger cities — and most other nights for girls’ volleyball.
Saturdays belong to colleges like NCAA FCS national football champion North Dakota State (NFL quarterback Carson Wentz is a former Bison) and the University of North Dakota (NFL tight end Jim Kleinsasser wore the green and white), plus other NCAA Division II, NAIA and junior college teams.
In October, junior hockey teams and the powerful UND Fighting Hawks hit the ice. The Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League and the Bismarck Bobcats and Minot Minotauros of the North American Hockey League share ice time with local high schools through the winter.
And while we’re name-dropping, we’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention NBA Coach and UND alum, Phil Jackson; Jamestown native and MLB All Star Darrin Erstad; and light heavyweight Virgil Hill who called both Grand Forks and Williston home.
Paint your face, pound on the glass, and get ready for your close up – any time is a great time for sports in North Dakota.
