BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Main Street Initiative Student Advisory Committee will meet April 11 at the North Dakota State Capitol. The group was formed as a cooperative effort between the Department of Public Instruction, Department of Commerce and the Office of the Governor to allow youth to share ideas to help build healthy, vibrant communities in North Dakota.
"The Main Street Initiative Student Advisory Committee is a vital resource to our administration and the leadership within the Main Street team," Gov. Doug Burgum said. "This group of students provides insight into how this initiative can help to build a community that will attract and retain a 21st century workforce and that youth want to call home."
In addition to the meeting with the Governor and the Main Street team, students will listen in on the legislative session and take a tour of the Capitol.
“Young people are invaluable leaders in their communities, but their voices aren’t always heard. The Main Street Initiative student advisory committee elevates youth voices and empowers them to share their ideas about what would make a community attractive for them,” Jim Upgren with the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction said.
Nine students from across the state currently participate in the committee. Students represent the communities of Cheyenne, Pembina, Williston, Lakota, Minot, Fargo, Linton, McClusky and Park River.
The committee is currently seeking students from southwest North Dakota and Tribal Nations. Interested students should be involved in their community and be willing to share ideas for improvement of North Dakota’s communities.
